Our second meeting

I have learned so much since starting this class! What I took away from class were more simple and helpful writing techniques, this is probably because this is where I’m at as a writer. I learned the most about three topics. I learned how to overcome writers block or the hesitation to start writing. I was taught how to make an effective ending. I also learned what makes writing exciting.
To overcome writers block the primary advice is to start with what you know. Professor Benedict gave us examples in his writings where he was crunched for time and so he started with what he knew. He explained that sometimes you keep what you started with or you might move what you wrote later in your work or you might just scratch it and move on. No matter what you do it helps to start with what you know, so that you can get started and start the flow of your writing.
During our meeting we analyzed three chapter endings and we looked at why they were effective. We looked at Tigers life as a child his life as a high schooler and the start of his career. We saw the sad harsh childhood years compared to his hopeful romance in Highschool and even later the opportunity and freedom with the start of his career. Endings are just as important as beginnings you have to provide a meaningful and to have a meaningful beginning.
I also learned that conversation in reading is like action in a movie. It spices the story up. Try to use dialogue to tell a story and people will be able to imagine it better than if you tried describing with words. Especially when trying to show a relationship between characters or people. It is also important to use different perspectives and new voices. Using a different mix of styles of characters and views will create a dynamic feel to your writing.
I am excited to start working on my project more and hope to see it strengthen the esports program.

First meeting

All of my expectations for this class have been blown out of the water! For someone who considers themselves a poor writer, I didn’t expect to enjoy a class titled “Institute for Writing and Mass Media.” Here is my account on attending the first class.

While on the drive from campus to the meeting house I was quite nervous as we took all these small backroads. My tensions eased when I saw the beautiful wooden house that we would be meeting in. We entered through the garage and took our shoes off before walking on the stained wood floors throughout the house. I sat in the back of the bunch in an attempt to have everyone else be comfortable. I was mortified when Jeffrey Benedict walked in because at the moment I was searching for a lost apple pen.

When the session began I became more at ease. Mr. Benedict spent time between answering the many questions posed and sharing all his wonderful experiences. I had the chance to write about 500 words worth of notes on all that he taught. What I learned that was most notable I wrote in bolded letters. I will post them here. Write every day. Write with fear. Find what is a part of your story! Interviews are based on comfort between people.

I fear that I might want to become a professional writer. Writing has always intimidated me. Ever since I was a child writing short stories that my cousin would read and give me feedback. I never would have thought that writing is a potential career choice for me. Until my next post -Samuel Hancock

Getting to Know the Blogger

Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Samuel Hancock. I am a college student attending Southern Virginia University. I am a freshman as of January 2020. I created this blog due to a writing in the media class that I am enrolled in. I decided to take this course because I found my writing to be lacking. I hope to show you the learning and progression of a young writer starting from scratch.
